Alexander Abaza is one of the most significant Soviet photographers of the 1960s and ’70s. Following the tradition of constructivism he started in the ’60s and soon became the main photojournalist of that time working for Riga newspapers such as ‘Sovietskaja Latvia’ and ‘Sovietskaja Molodiozh’. Photography of the 1960s had revived the sprit of the soviet constructivism with its perspectives, close-ups and graphic geometry, having supplanted utopian terseness with minimalist stylistics. Abaza is one of its major representatives.
